Strengthening International Cooperation on Sustainable Refrigerated Maritime Transport

30 October 2025

The Greener Reefers project organized a week-long study trip in Barcelona, Spain, from 20 – 24 October 2025. The trip centred around participation in the Intermodal Europe 2025 trade fair, technical site visits, a multi-stakeholder workshop, and strategic bilateral discussions. The delegation consisted of representatives from the GIZ global team, and project partners in Costa Rica and South Africa.

The first full day focused on project alignment and industry exposure. In the afternoon, delegates visited Barcelona Port’s intermodal terminal. On the second day, delegates participated at the Intermodal Europe 2025 with a dedicated Greener Reefers Panel on Sustainable Transformation of cold chains. The third day included a technical visit to Thermo King Barcelona and provided technical insights into the R290 proof-of-concept development process. In the evening, a guided sightseeing tour and group dinner provided cultural context. On the fourth day, a full-day workshop brought together project partners, technical experts and industry stakeholders. The workshop facilitated deep technical dialogue and strategic planning for upcoming country-level activities. On the fifth day, delegates concluded the trip with bilateral sessions to align next steps, planned collaborations, follow-up actions and a closing lunch.

The Greener Reefers delegation trip was successfully implemented and delivered significant professional, technical, and strategic value. The trip fostered dialogue between African, European, and Latin American partners, encouraging shared learning and future cooperation.
